What is my wrecked car worth to an auto salvage yard?

wildflower asked:

My 1994 Dodge Intrepid was in prefect running condition, I was in my car at the traffic light when I was rear-ended and the car was totaled out. Now I have to get rid of it and thought an auto salvage yard might want it for parts. But I don’t know what to sell it for. Does anyone have any idea? The Salvage yards are in a rural area of Louisiana. Please help.
Oh yes, it has about 170,500 miles on it.

Hey your car is worth scrap which is about 200$. the car not wrecked is worth 800 dollars. you can check the nada books they will show you that the car is worth 800 not wrecked. sorry i know your probably attached to it and think its worth more.

HI. Beings that it’s a 1994 Dodge Intreped, it’s worth nothing. They may give you $100, but I doubt that. They may even charge you.

About $300, seeing as how you probably got an insurance check for it…so any money that you’d get after would be bonus.

Yep, it seems the going rate is about 100 dollars to maybe 175 if you tow it the yard yourself, but you just gotta call em and ask em. You might not find anybody to take it, I am surprised that you still have it, who totaled it out , if insurance did than normarlly they take possession of the car when they pay you out for it and declare it totaled.

Most salvage yards will actually charge YOU for the towing fees.

But, you’ve got to get rid of it somehow! May as well call to find out.

Go to Dodge and ask them for a new one because somebody wrecked it.They should come get it and give you a new one. Or let your insurance agent handle it.

just call several junk yards and ask them. I just sold a old one ad got offers from 100 to 300 and they came and picked up for free and gave me 300. Or list it for sell on craigslist, its free. you have to have title for the junk yard.

Sometimes, they come out to your place and pick a car up for free. Other times, they give you $50, $100, or something like that. It’s not much.

With that many miles I feel the running gear is worthless, so it’s really only good for the metals that make it up. Maybe a hundred or two.

The parts will be worth a lot to a junk yard for resale but I don’t think you’ll get $50.

I was an appraiser at a collision center and every now and then we had one of these no repair cases.
Usually a company connected to a salvage yard came in and purchased the vehicle for the charge of the tow bill, estimate is it was not going to be repaired due to damage.

At best you may get $200 for your vehicle.

Well, Dodge’s don’t exactly have the best condition bodywork and internal components when they are new! So when it is wrecked and almost 200,000 miles old I don’t know… maybe $50 – 100. If the guy was a real tw*t then he could charge you, but that would be harsh. If he does, take the car somewhere else.

wildflower, Try calling a car repair shop in Louisiana. They can help you with your questions. Try calling a few repair centers and compare what they say.

I wouldn’t expect anything for it. I know that in the area I live in or further into the country/ quebec there are a lot of mechanics who own garages and buy cars just like this to fix up and resell. I would go try and find something like that first since they may give you upwards of 300-500 for it. You would need to cover towing though if they don’t have their own truck. (In all honesty though a towing fee isn’t much)

However here is a list of things you could probably salvage yourself and are all very easy to take off the car. Also my estimated prices but go on ebay or something and check out what they’re actually selling for:
Catalytic converter: easy to remove, $100-250
Mass airflow sensor: even easier to remove, $30-70
Battery: ridiculously easy to remove (generally just a single screw): $depends on age
    Deck: easy, but dunno price
Any aftermarket parts you may have: (replacement stuff)
    Tires: lol
Wheels: Alloys will sell for a good price, easy to remove

That’s pretty much it for easy stuff. If you are going to get another intrepid then there’s a bunch of other stuff I would take so that you can save money on future repairs for your new car. (Near future since it is a dodge). pay a mechanic to take out some parts for you such as brakes can save you hundreds if they’re in good condition, anything on your front end really i.e. struts, balljoints, etc. Also look up common rust spots for that vehicle and take that part too depending on if you have room for all this junk (junk that will save you way more than you pay to get them removed though).

If you don’t want any of this hassle which I can fully understand, put an ad (usedanywhere.com is a good one) saying your situation and I’m positive you’ll have lots of other GM owning suckers who will flock to your gold mine of parts. Charge them about half of what they woudl pay anywhere else and make them remove it themselves. OR just get it towed and never look back.
